Backpacking Tents
December 21st, 2007 Posted in Tent CampingInterested in camping and backpacking tents? If you are going backpacking for more than one day, you may very well need a tent. There are some things to consider and preparing is definately a wise decision. As the boyscouts say “Be Prepared”.
Backyard Camping
Camping for many people is a very relaxing and fun experience, however if you go out with the wrong equipment, chances are your not going to have much fun. Most people I know go camping at campgrounds, or even in their own back yard, and they dont need to worry too much about the choice of equipment in these situations. However, there are some who like to camp out in the middle of nowhere, and getting the wrong type of essentials can spell big problems. One consideration that is very important is getting the right backpacking tents.
Camping and Hiking
If your planning on going hiking, you should be in decent shape. When you add camping to the mix, getting around is more of a struggle. That is why the proper backpacking tents are essential. If you buy one that is too heavy, you are going to be slowed down quite dramatically, and you are going to tire long before you find the best spot to camp. That means a backpacking tent has to be as light as possible, but it still have to be a good one. This can make choosing a little hard.
Choose a Tent
There are backpacking tents that are made of very light materials that can fold up into a compact state to go into the backpack or attach to it in some way rather easily. There are some great materials out there which are now used for backpacking tents, and you have to find one made just for that purpose. They should be compact when being transported, but they should also be able to withstand any type of weather that may come your way. You may be able to carry one easily, but will it do the job when you need protection the most? Some of the modern personal dome tents are absolutely wonderful.
By far the best thing you can do for your backpacking tent is to learn to use it before you go. Go ahead and set it up in your backyard and figure out the method for breaking it down as well. You will thank yourself when your out in the field fiddling around with tent poles. Once its setup in your yard, consider adding some scotchguard or other waterproofing to it again, even if it says its already waterproof. Not only do I spray down the top of my tents well with waterproofing, but after it dries, I flip it over and absolutely cover the bottom areas with a very generous layer of waterproofing as well. Believe me, you will thank youself for it!
