I just bought my 3rd large multiple person camping tent. These are the real big ones that you may see that boast they can hold 10 people etc.. My first tent actually lasted a lot longer than the 2nd one did, but between the two of them I have learned a lot about keeping these large format tents clean and in good shape. With some care, i’m going to make my 3rd time a charm and never have to buy another one. These tips are written with large format tents in mind, but much applies to tents of all types.
Keep Flames And Stoves Away
You can ensure that your large camping tents last you longer by taking good care of them in the first place and so you need to ensure that while out camping, epecially with the kids that you must follow a number of steps that will ensure that you don’t end up damaging your tent and which will in turn cause it to last far longer. So, it means that you should make sure that the mobile cooking stove is never placed close to the tent and even ensure that the tent is placed at a safe distance from any campfires as well.
Careful With Zips And Flaps
In addition, you should also ensure that the flaps of your tent are not violently moved or pulled and you also need to make absolutely sure that during the rainy weather your tent is not affected by the muddy conditions or dampness that a rain storm may cause to it. Such measures have added significance when you are away from the campsite, and when kids are about, you should not allow them to run about within the tent. What’s more, you should also never place your camping tents close to sharp rocks or over sticks that can cause tears to the tent, and you should also ensure that the outside is well protected while making absolutely sure not to ever allow the tent to sag. Proper setup of your tent in general will help it last longer.
Keep Your Tent Clean
You must also immediately wipe away any stains or spills and use materials to clean off such stains or spillages as are recommended in the tent’s manuals, and once your trip in the outdoors is coming to an end, you must store your large tents in a proper manner and this may also require you to clean out any dirt or food crumbs left over from your trip which means that the next time you open your tent, it will be clean, and more importantly, you need to ensure that it is dry since otherwise it could be damaged by mildew and other types of fungi. Storing tents that are wet is one of the most common no-no’s for tent health, but it is one of the most common things that people do.
Unpack Them When You Get Home
You should also ensure that your large camping tents are folded neatly and carefully and there should not be any stress to the fabric, and once you find a place to store the tent, you must also ensure that no heavy or sharp objects are placed on top of it which could cause the tent to rip or tear. Pack your tent up properly. You should always unpack your tent when you get back from the field to allow it to dry, take inventory, and pack it up properly again for long term storage. Take some time and treat your tent with respect, it will return the favor with many years of quality fun.
